The origins begin with painting, Madonna with the Long Neck (1535-40), by Mannerist painter Parmigiano. The Mannerist painters were interested in exploring the expressiveness of the body often distrorting the form at the cost of anatomical accuracy. This is the life sized sketch that will later inform the sculpture.
