Origin of the World

The title of the work, Origin of the World, derives from painter Gustav Corbet's L'Origine du Monde (1866) that scandalized art viewing public for the direct full frontal depiction of genitalia. In this work, the warm fleshiness that is so prominent in the painting is replaced by the cold matter-of-factness of the coccyx and hip bones pared down as sculpture.

This work was created during my one-month artists residency at the Institut Seni Budaya Indonesia (Indonesia Art and Culture Institute, ISBI) with the Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale.
