The Diacritic Archive

rst_lib_0456.jpg

Okay, it's not really an archive. It's just my obsession with books, which has just reached a new level of geekdom. I paid some pretty pennies for a bar scanner, which hooks into my linux netbook running a library application called Alexandria. I can scan the ISBN bar codes of the books into the program and it sucks thumbnails and info from databases such as Amazon. It's sweet. So sweet I spent six hours bar scanning the stacks. The collection focuses on art, design, architecture, some literature. Two days later, I invited students from my Concept Development class for a meeting at the house and officially launched my lifelong dream: to own a library.

If you have to ask, porn is filed under art...

And for the finishing touch, collection stickers are being printed. RFID tags when I become a millionaire...

Art Activity in Bangkok and Yangon

The Jungle Book

I was able to complete a performative element for the larger project, The Jungle Book, an examination of fact and fiction in the Mekong subregion, at Asiatopia 2008 held at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. The performance draws from literature, popular media, and traditions in art installation, performance and typography. The next components planned include photography and academic presentation. Images of the performance can be viewed on flickr.

From Bangkok, I traveled to Yangon, Myanmar in connection with our research for the upcoming Asia Pacific Triennale (APT6). This time, my research was very compact and focused, and I was able to meet with all of the artists I needed to. I'm happy to see that the contemporary arts community in Burma is doing well. Images of the research trip can be viewed on flickr.
